  3. and prime minister 1972-75. He cultivated
  4. closer relations with Asia, attempted
  5. redistribution of wealth, and raised loans to
  6. increase national ownership of industry and
  7. resources. When the opposition blocked
  8. finance bills in the Senate, following a
  9. crisis of confidence, Whitlam refused to call
  10. a general election, and was dismissed by the
  11. governor general (Sir John Kerr). He was
  12. defeated in the subsequent general election
  13. by Malcolm Fraser.
